The Basics

What Is One Rep Max?

Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single repetition with good form. Testing it directly is fatiguing and risky — especially for squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. A 1RM calculator estimates it from a sub-maximal set (weight × reps) using a prediction formula.

Max Strength

Train mostly in the 85–95% range for low reps (1–5) to build neurological efficiency and absolute strength.

Hypertrophy

Most muscle growth happens at 65–80% of 1RM for moderate reps (6–12) with controlled technique and near-failure effort.

Endurance

Higher reps at 50–65% build work capacity, recovery between sets, and connective-tissue resilience.

Why This Estimate Varies

No formula knows your fiber type, fatigue level, or skill at grinding through a hard rep. Epley tends to overestimate slightly at higher reps; Brzycki is more conservative past ~8 reps. The consensus estimate smooths those differences, but it is still a prediction — not a tested max.

For safety, treat the result as a planning number. Use it to set training percentages, track long-term progress, and compare lifts across body weights. If you want a true 1RM, do it under a qualified spotter, with safety bars, and after a full warm-up.

How do you calculate one rep max?

The most common formula is Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps / 30). For example, if you bench 185 lb for 8 reps, the estimate is 185 × 1.267 ≈ 234 lb. We also run Brzycki and Lombardi formulas and report the mean so the estimate isn't tied to one model.

How accurate are 1RM calculators?

Reasonably accurate for reps in the 1–10 range, especially on familiar lifts. Accuracy drops as reps get higher because fatigue and technique breakdown make the formula less predictive. Individual differences in muscle fiber type, lifting skill, and daily readiness can shift the real number by ±5–10%.

Should I test my actual one rep max?

Only if you have a good reason. Direct 1RM testing is stressful and carries injury risk. For most trainees, estimated 1RMs from sub-maximal sets are enough to set training loads. If you do test, use a spotter, safety bars, and a proper warm-up.

Which formula is best?

Epley is simple and widely used. Brzycki tends to be more conservative for higher-rep sets. Lombardi fits some lifters well but can be less stable at very low reps. We report all three and use the consensus mean — it's the most robust single planning number.

Can I use this for bodyweight exercises?

For weighted calisthenics — weighted pull-ups, dips, belt squats — yes. Enter the added load. For pure bodyweight, the calculator doesn't apply because external resistance isn't a free weight you can scale directly.

How often should I recalculate my 1RM?

Recalculate after a mesocycle or whenever you hit a new rep PR with the same weight. For hypertrophy blocks, every 4–8 weeks is plenty. For strength peaking, every 2–4 weeks keeps your percentages honest.
